First Time with Mayku and Jesmonite @HKUGAC

Updated: Jul 5, 2023

This week, we conducted our first class with Mayku FormBox vacuum former and Jesmonite for the HKUGAC class.

By guiding each student to make his or her own initial's fridge magnet, we introduced them to the porcess of moulding. They carefully maesured the ingredients for the plaster, which was used to make magnets with Mayku-FormBox-prepared moulds. Jesmonite pigments are added to the mix to adorn it, as well as introducing the wonderful, eco-friendly material.

What is Jesmonite?

Jesmonite is made from a combination of gypsum (a mineral created from sedimentary rock) and water-based acrylic resin. It is considered safe, sustainable and very easy to use. Although this time we are using the cast powder that comes with the Mayku package, Jesmonite dyes have been used which give saturated colours to the resulting cast.

To further display the possibilities of vacuum forming, we made hologram viewers with Mayku Cast Sheets, which is simple yet impressive. We hope thie fun project can inspire the class to think outside the box when creating their own.

The hands-on experience helped students to better understand the design and manufacturing process of a product, giving them a boost for their "maker" journey.
